Second grade travel collage

2nd grade artists have been thinking about how art comes from every part of the world and looks different from different cultures and countries. We compared and contrasted art from all over by looking at a slide show, books about art and culture, and looking at various artworks. We read Dr. Seuss' book, "Oh the Places You'll Go!" and thought about where we would like to go if we could travel to see any art in the world.

Check out our slide show by clicking HERE

We created these collages of us traveling to those places! We thought about how artists use lines to show movement and where the plane could have traveled.

Fourth Grade Landscapes

Fourth Grade artists started this project by each receiving a laminated landscape and worked with a friend to find the foreground, middleground, backgrounds, and horizen lines in each piece.

We did several sketches and then chose our best ones to transfer to the large paper. We worked hard to use lines and patterns in our work to make them interesting and unique.

We even had a prize drawing for those of us who could get these answers correct!

The results are beautiful aren't they?

Learning Goals:

I can identify the foreground, middle ground, background and horizon line in a photo or artwork.
I can use size and overlapping to show space in my artwork.
I can use warm colors to make some things pop out and cold colors to make some thing recede.
I can use patterns in my work.

Kindergarten frogs

Kindergarten artists watched the youtube clip of the song/book "5 Green and Speckled Frogs." We noticed how the artist made the eyes super big to make the frogs look cuter. We drew our own frogs and used the dark and light values of green to color them. On the frame, we used a dashed line to show the flight path of a big that is about to be eaten!

Learning Goals:
* I can describe light and dark values
* I can use shapes to draw 3 or more frogs
* I can use a dashed line to show the movement of a fly or bug

Kindergarten Paul Klee cats

Kindergarten artists read the book inspired by Paul Klee called, "The Cat and the Bird."

We also looked at the images in the Paul Clay's book entitled, "Animal Tricks."

We talked about the art elements of line and shape and used to them to create our own Paul Klee inspired cats. We also reviewed the art elements of shapes, lines and colors. We used shapes to draw the cats, lines to create a line pattern, and cool colors to use in the background.

We used cool colors to create line patterns in the background.

We reviewed warm and cool colors by putting images with these colors into a Venn Diagram on the board.

We like to write our learning goal on the back of our artworks to share with our parents what we were learning about when we take our artwork home.

Learning Goals;
I can recognize some of Paul Klee's artwork.
I can use lines to create a line pattern.
I can find shapes in an artwork.
I can separate warm colored markers from cold colored markers.
I can create my own Klee inspired cat.

First Grade Line Monsters Collage from the book "Lines that Wiggle!"

First grade artists are thinking about the art elements. We talked about what things artists use to make their artwork fantastic. We checked out the lists (and posters) of: Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Pattern, Space and Form. Next, we read a book called, "Lines that Wiggle" that had all sorts of lines in it.

We practiced drawing lines by brainstorming different sorts and having children draw them on the board in a list. We used cut paper shapes to create our monsters, puffy paint to create the line "spaghetti" and oil pastels to draw patterns and hair.

Learning Goals:
I can draw various types of lines.
I can name various types of lines.
I can create a collage.
I can use puffy paint to create a line.

2nd Grade Rousseau Jungle Collages

2nd Grade Rousseau Jungle Collages

Last week, the 2nd graders finished their jungle collages! Their artwork was inspired by the artist Henri Rousseau who loved painting jungle scenes from his imagination. We read a book about Rousseau and learned about his life and the history of his art work. During this project, we started off each every class by filling in the definition of collage on the board: "Using many art materials to create one piece of art!" The second graders were masters of collage by the end of this project as they practiced drawing, coloring, painting, cutting, and glueing to make their masterpieces!

1st Grade Movement and Line Bugs

1st Grade artists read the book, "The Straight Line Wonder." We looked at the way the illustrator used lines to show the direction that something had already moved, where someone was looking, and to show mood. We were inspired by springtime and drew bugs using line to show their flight path! Then in the frames, we used various types of lines to decorate our beautiful artworks.

Kindergarten Warm/Cool Jim Dine Hearts

Our kindergarten artists are learning about the artist Jim Dine just in time for Valentine's Day! Jim Dine was an artist who loved doing art with hearts! Our kindergarten artists combined heart art with learning about warm and cool colors. First we sang a song about warm and colors to the tune of Jingle Bells.

We also looked at a slide show set up for teaching about Warm and Cool Colors!

Students had fun learning how to draw hearts and then used various kinds of lines to divide up each of their hearts.  Inside their heart was colored using only warm colors, and outside was colored using only cool colors to help the heart "stand out." WE thought about who we love and who we would want to give our fancy Jim Dine hearts to for Valentine's Day!

Looking forward to another FANTASTIC year in the art room!

Each year, we try to start off the school year with a collaborative mural that focuses on a positive theme  or goal for us all. The art lesson is merely a review of the art elements to get our memories flowing and our creative juices pumping. This year, we will be tracing our arms and hands and putting them on a mural in a way that shows each of us "reaching for the stars!" The designs in each hand will be a review of pattern, line, shape, color, form, texture, space and value.
