3rd Grade Jim Dine Heart Plaques

3rd grade artists learned about the life and art of Jim Dine. They looked at the themes of his work and thought about why he chose them.

We also had a lot of discussion around a slide presentation all about Jim Dine. After this, we created sketches of our own style heart art using shape (2D) in preparation for our 3D (form) clay collage sculpture! We talked about how to ensure that our heart stood out from the background using color schemes and added patterns to sculpture for added interest.

We glued popsicle sticks and jewels together for our base and used twiteez wire and beads to create a hanger! We had a blast!

Kindergarten Jim Dine Hearts

Kindergarten artists studied the art of Jim Dine! We looked at the colors, shapes, and textures in his artwork and talked about why he might have created heart art. We then drew our own heart art in time for Valentines's Day and practiced our use of warm and cool colors!

5th Grade Jim Dine Clay Hands

5th Grade artists were so very excited to start their clay projects. We discussed a slide show about Jim Dine and learned a little about his life and work. We talked about why he might have chosen the heart for his symbol and why he painted it over and over and over again!

We each created two sketches with some sort of heart design on it. On Day 2, we created our designs out of clay.

Learning Goals:
Students can recognize the difference between 2D shape and 3D Form
Students can recognize the art of Jim Dine
Students can use hand building techniques to create a clay hand

Reporting.... what 3rd Graders learned about Jim Dine and Value/Blending!

3rd Graders are learning about the art of Jim Dine! They enjoyed a slide show about his work and then designed their own heart art just in time for Valentine's Day. They thought about their color schemes, and creating value while blending in their paintings.

What I learned about Jim Dine is that when he "chooses an object, he makes it HIS!" - Morgan, 3rd Grade

What I learned about Jim Dine was that his mom died when he was young. Maybe missing his mom made him paint hearts because they reminded him of his mom! -Ella, 3rd Grade

What I learned about how to blend light paints and dark paints into colored paint to create value! - Layne, 3rd Grade

What I learned about was that he got his ideas for painting robes when he was looking at a newspaper and saw a robe in an advertisement. He said, "That looks like ME!"  - Cody, 3rd Grade

What I learned was that he painted a robe because he thought it looked like him. The robe was empty and I think he was sad so he thought it looked like himself.  - Olivia, 3rd grade

Kindergarten Warm/Cool Jim Dine Hearts

Our kindergarten artists are learning about the artist Jim Dine just in time for Valentine's Day! Jim Dine was an artist who loved doing art with hearts! Our kindergarten artists combined heart art with learning about warm and cool colors. First we sang a song about warm and colors to the tune of Jingle Bells.

We also looked at a slide show set up for teaching about Warm and Cool Colors!

Students had fun learning how to draw hearts and then used various kinds of lines to divide up each of their hearts.  Inside their heart was colored using only warm colors, and outside was colored using only cool colors to help the heart "stand out." WE thought about who we love and who we would want to give our fancy Jim Dine hearts to for Valentine's Day!
