Kindergarten Shape Monsters
Kindergarteners thought about the art element of shape and we used shapes to create some fun and silly monsters! We watched this "Monster Boogie" video, and sang and danced the song together:
We used Primary Colors to create the big three shapes of the monsters! We watched this Sesame Street youtube video to see how primary colors mix to create Secondary Colors.
On Day 2 of the project, we sang and danced the Monster Boogie again, and read this book about Textured Monsters to get some ideas about what details we could add to our own Shape Monsters.

Kindergarten Jim Dine Hearts
Kindergarten artists studied the art of Jim Dine! We looked at the colors, shapes, and textures in his artwork and talked about why he might have created heart art. We then drew our own heart art in time for Valentines's Day and practiced our use of warm and cool colors!

2nd Grade Rousseau Jungle Collages
2nd Grade Rousseau Jungle Collages
Last week, the 2nd graders finished their jungle collages! Their artwork was inspired by the artist Henri Rousseau who loved painting jungle scenes from his imagination. We read a book about Rousseau and learned about his life and the history of his art work. During this project, we started off each every class by filling in the definition of collage on the board: "Using many art materials to create one piece of art!" The second graders were masters of collage by the end of this project as they practiced drawing, coloring, painting, cutting, and glueing to make their masterpieces!

Looking forward to another FANTASTIC year in the art room!
Each year, we try to start off the school year with a collaborative mural that focuses on a positive theme or goal for us all. The art lesson is merely a review of the art elements to get our memories flowing and our creative juices pumping. This year, we will be tracing our arms and hands and putting them on a mural in a way that shows each of us "reaching for the stars!" The designs in each hand will be a review of pattern, line, shape, color, form, texture, space and value.

1st grade 3D From Pigs
1st graders have been studying the art elements that make good art effective. In this project, they looked at how artists use value to make something light or dark. They used crayons to create dark green by pushing hard and light green by pushing lightly. Then, we took note of the differences between form and shape. Form being 3D and Shape only 2D. We had a blast making these little piggies out of model magic. We even mixed our own tint by coloring red marker onto white clay to make pink!

Kindergarten Caterpillars!
Kindergarten artists have been introduced to the art room and are having fun with art by way of books, songs, puppets and of course art materials!! We have had a great time reading Eric Carle's Hungry Caterpillar book and then used the caterpillar as inspiration for our artwork. Our artists used shape, lines, and patterns to create these wonderful hungry caterpillars!

Kindergarten Alligator Lunches
Kindergarten artists read the book, "What's for Dinner?" and saw how the illustrator used mouths in the book that actually open! We created our own big alligator mouths and practiced cutting shapes like circles, triangles and fancy fish shapes. We also drew some bumpy texture onto each alligator. Watch out! They bite! :)
