First Grade Line Monsters Collage from the book "Lines that Wiggle!"

First grade artists are thinking about the art elements. We talked about what things artists use to make their artwork fantastic. We checked out the lists (and posters) of: Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Pattern, Space and Form. Next, we read a book called, "Lines that Wiggle" that had all sorts of lines in it.

We practiced drawing lines by brainstorming different sorts and having children draw them on the board in a list. We used cut paper shapes to create our monsters, puffy paint to create the line "spaghetti" and oil pastels to draw patterns and hair.

Learning Goals:
I can draw various types of lines.
I can name various types of lines.
I can create a collage.
I can use puffy paint to create a line.

Kindergarten Rainbow Order Stars

Kindergarten artists read the book, "Draw me a Star" by the author and illustrator Eric Carle. We learned how to draw stars in a few different ways. We also sang the Roy G. Biv song that teaches us about rainbow order. We drew our shooting stars, and and the shooting lines be all different types of lines! (one of our art elements).  Next, we colored our shooting lines in rainbow order.

Kindergarten Mexican Patterned Blankets

Kindergarten artists have been learning about the art and culture of Mexico. They looked at the many colorful patterns and designs in Mexican blankets. Then we used our cutting and glueing skills to cut various kinds of lines and shapes in a pattern for our own blankets!

Kindergarten Shape, Line, and Texture Trucks

Kindergarten Artists are thinking about shapes, lines, and texture! We looked for shapes in images of trucks and used rectangles, square and circles to draw their own vehicles. Next, we talked about how texture is the way that something feels. We used texture rubbing plates to put under our trucks to create color and texture on them. Finally, we looked at the many kinds of lines that artists use. We drew some of them to decorate the backs of our trucks.

Kindergarten Caterpillars!

Kindergarten artists have been introduced to the art room and are having fun with art by way of books, songs, puppets and of course art materials!! We have had a great time reading Eric Carle's Hungry Caterpillar  book and then used the caterpillar as inspiration for our artwork. Our artists used shape, lines,  and patterns to create these wonderful hungry caterpillars!
