Second grade Andy Warhol self portrait collage

Second grade artists have been studying the Pop Art movement with Andy Warhol. We learned a bit about his work by watching a short youtube video (click here). We learned about his life and read the book "Uncle Andy's" which can also be found on youtube by clicking here.
Image result for uncle andy's book

We noticed how he liked to repeat images and how he copied images that were normally not considered art. We used his ideas to inspire our own pop self-portraits!

We also thought about calligraphy and graphic design by using creative lettering to design our names and qualities about us with each of our images.

On the back, we filled out our three favorite facts about Andy Warhol's life and art.

Learning Goals:
I can identify the art of Andy Warhol
I can describe Pop Art
I can show blending in my art with crayon
I can use calligraphy and creative lettering to create my own name.
I can list 3 things about Andy Warhol's life and art.

4th Grade Koi Fish

4th grade artists are learning about the art and lives of people in Asia, particularly Japan with this project. Through our slide show, we looked at the historical significance of the Koi fish as well as how it has become a popular hobby fish for its beauty! We created our own fish with either a side view or from the top and used watercolor markers, water and salt to create the frothy water backgrounds. We thought about the art elements of (blending) color, space (overlapping) and pattern.

Click here to see our slide show.

Learning Goals:
I can identify Asian Art
I can discuss why the Koi were important to the ancient people of Japan
I can use blending, pattern and space in my art
I can use markers to create a painted effect

Second grade Henry Rousseau jungle animals

2nd grade artists have been learning about the life and work of the artist Henri Matisse. He loved the jungle, even though he was never able to visit one in his lifetime, and drew many jungle animals. We drew animals like giraffes, lions, tigers, birds etc. and used blending in our painting techniques, showed we understood the art element of space by overlapping our leaves and animals, and also chose different values of leaves to create variety in our artworks.

Learning Goals:
*I can talk about the life and art of Henri Rousseau
* I can use overlapping in my leaves to show space
* I can use blending techniques to create color and value on my animal

Third Grade Mini Mona Lisas

Third grade artists are studying the life and art of Leonardo Da Vinci. They are learning about one of the most famous and widely recognized portraits in the whole world... the MONA LISA! We even learned that she was so popular that she was even stolen at one point! We read the book, "Who Stole the Mona Lisa?" and learned a bit more about her history.

After reading, we practiced drawing her portrait (and landscape background) for ourselves! We practiced various coloring techniques with colored pencils such as: blending, layering and mixing. We practiced some calligraphy when writing her name for our projects. After assembling our mini-Monas in old silver Premier jewelry boxes, early finishers were able to do an Art Challenge: We challenged them to complete a portrait on a photocopy that included only Mona's face and hands. They used their imaginations to think up a setting, fashion, and theme for their version of the Mona.

Learning Goals:
I can talk about and write down 6 facts about the life and art of Leonardo Da Vinci.
I can draw a portrait like Mona Lisa.
I can draw a landscapes that shows space (things get smaller as they are further away).
I can use various coloring techniques in my art.
I can do some calligraphy with Mona Lisa's name

Kindergarten Native American Tipis

Kindergarten artists are studying Native American art and learning about the various types of houses that Native Americans lived in. Kindergarteners learned how the tipis were constructed as well as the fact that they loved putting patterns into their homes. We drew our own tipis and blended cool color paints to create a beautiful sky in the background.

Fourth grade island architecture

4th grade artists thought about island destinations right around spring break and we designed our very own island vacation house architecture!!!

We used neon and regular watercolor paints to create our visions. Each child practiced with blending, layering and mixing paint in their masterpiece.

1st grade Princess and the Pea

First grade artists thought about the differences between an author and an illustrator of a book. We talked about art careers and what we could be if we wanted to grow up and be an artist. We then looked at two renditions of the book "The Princess and the Pea." One was more like the original tale and the other was more of a modern spoof on the story. The illustrators chose to do their artwork very differently.

We noticed the different textures  of the donated fabrics that we had and glued the strips down to pile up the many mattresses for our princes and princesses. We also worked hard to blend watercolor cold paint colors in the background.
