Jamestown Elementary Art Room Kick Off!

We are so excited to kick off another great year of art and creativity here in Hudsonville and have been having a blast welcoming back all of our great little artists! We have so many exciting projects planned and look forward to sharing them with our students. Our curriculum is full of experimentation with different materials, learning about historical famous artists (and some contemporary ones), reviewing the art elements and principles of design, and being introduced to our 2015-2016 cultural focus this year: Asian Art!

At Jamestown Elementary, we are kicking off the year with a book called "Only One You!" In addition to great lessons about how we are each unique and about students making good choices, it has some fantastic illustrations!

Each student and staff member are working on their contribution to our school-wide mural that is inspired by the book, "Only One You!" It was inspired by this mural:

Learning Goals:
*Students will review/learn about murals.
*Students will review/learn about the art elements of: line, shape, color, texture, as well as the art principle of pattern.
*Students will work together to assemble the mural.
*Each student will create a unique fish to contribute to the mural.

We look forward to the creativity and unique creations that this year holds!

Welcome to the Art Room!!!

We are excited to begin another year filled with fun, creativity, a lot of art production!

About Mrs. Teitsma:  I graduated in 2001 from Calvin College and have been teaching elementary art since 2003.  I enjoy spending time with my husband and three sons, digital scrapbooking, photography, fishing and gardening.

About Mrs. Worden:  I graduated in 2001 from Hope College and this will be my 13th year teaching elementary art.  A few of my favorite things include family time with my husband and twin daughters, scrapbooking, painting, playing the piano, and biking.

THE ART CURRICULUM:

We will be beginning our school year with our annual school wide collaborative project which is titled “Jamestown Elementary: Reaching unique growth potential” With it, we will be starting the year off with a review of the art elements of line, shape, color, form, texture, value, and space. Throughout the year, many projects will be focused on giving children experiences with each of the above art elements. Upper grade levels also focus on art principles such as pattern, movement, balance, emphasis, unity, and movement.

After this, each grade level will work on our annual rotating cultural month. This year’s focus is Asian Art. Each grade focuses on a different aspect of the culture’s art so that all students can be exposed to a variety of styles and concepts from that culture as they observe each other’s art displayed in our hallways.

Art history is also a large component of our curriculum. Each grade level focuses on learning about the lives and work of historical as well as some contemporary artists. This year, each grade will be learning about the following artists:

Kindergarten: Vincent Van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, Eric Carle, Joan Miro, Paul Klee, Jim Dine
1st Grade: Gustav Klimt, Norman Rockwell, Claude Monet, Salvador Dali
2nd Grade: Henri Matisse, Faith Ringgold, Joan Miro, Henri Rousseau, Dr. Seuss, Vincent Van Gogh, Tom Otterness,
3rd Grade: Frida Kahlo, Leonardo DaVinci, Jackson Pollock, Jim Dine, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, George Rodrigue
4th Grade: Diego Rivera, Heather Galler, Wassilly Kandinsky, Edgar Degas, Alexander Calder, Mary Cassatt
5th Grade: Chuck Close, Diego Rivera, Salvador Dali, Roy Lichtenstein, Georga O’Keeffe, Friedrich Hundertwasser

We also keep our curriculum lively by incorporating inspiration from literature and art careers for our art. Many of our projects are inspired from picture books, especially with our younger students. Also, all grades have projects that connect to art career choices such as: Graphic Design, Architecture, Fine Art, Art Education, Fashion Design, Entertainment Design, Photography, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Art Museum Director.

Finally we try to have each grade level have experience a variety of materials and genres. Some genre choices include: portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, cartoons, realism, abstraction, and figure drawing.

Classroom Expectations:
In art we have three main expectations for all students:
  1. Listening
  2. Respect
  3. Work Quietly
