Second Grade Architecture Birdhouses

We began this lesson by brainstorming about what job we could have if we wanted to grow up to be an artist. We looked at posters like the ones below to help guide our thinking. Some of the jobs are: Photographer, Art teacher, Interior Designer, Fashion Designer, Fine Artist, Graphic Designer, Industrial Designer and of course, Architect.
2nd grade artists read the book, "Iggy Peck, Architect," which is about a boy who LOVES architecture and happens to be in 2nd grade!

We thought about various types of architectural elements like Iggy did and created our own architecture in 3 birdhouses. We practiced our knowledge of the color families and chose one for each of our houses.

Finally, we drew birds for our houses and colored them with oil pastel, cut them out and glued them to their houses. What happy little birdies we have! :)

Learning Goals:
I can list a variety of art careers.
I can design architecture.
I can use the color groups: primary, secondary, warm & cool.
I can blend oil pastels.
I can create a collage.

4th Grade Edgar Degas and Figure Drawing

4th grade artists are learning about the art of Edgar Degas and how he did a lot of figure drawing. We are studying how to draw proportions of the human body correctly and to scale using mannequins and even real models! Students drew their own figures and are coloring around them using their choice of patterned color schemes.

4th Grade Landscapes

4th grade artists are studying various genres in art such as portraits, still life, landscapes, etc.  After looking at some landscapes, we reviewed foreground, middle ground, and background. We traced our lines with varying thicknesses, made sure to use pattern, think about size and space, use value and blending, and show emphasis somewhere in our artworks with our color schemes.

1st Grade Texture and Color Scheme Monsters

1st Graders were working on the art element of creating texture in their art! They drew texture in the monsters as well as used texture plates to make a texture rubbing in the background! We even used a different color scheme for each monster! Such fun!

5th Grade Form - Clay Owls!

5th grade artists have had a blast working with the art element of form.  They used model magic to create these owls (after sketching some various owl ideas). They thought about their color schemes, textures, and personalities of the owls they wanted to create. They used clay for the log that the owl is standing on! Such FUN!

5th grade Guitars - Industrial Design

5th grade artists are busy learning about the numerous career paths that art can lead us down such as: industrial design, graphic design, photography, fashion design, architecture, illustrator, entertainment designer, fine artist, museum director, art teacher..... and many more. We looked more specifically at some of the products that have been designed by industrial designers as well as the process that an industrial designer goes through to create his/her work. We designed our own guitars, considered our color schemes, and also thought about how to make the background look like you could "hear" what that guitar might sound like if it were played!
