Kindergarten shape and texture corduroy bears

Kindergarten artists are learning about how artists create texture in their work. We looked at the way that the illustrator of the book, "Courduroy" made the bear look furry. We used shapes to draw our own bears inspired by this illustrator and made them look like they had texture too!

After creating texture bears, we created our own 3D versions of our bears with clay!

Learning Goals:
I can create texture.
I can describe the difference between an author and an illustrator.
I can use shapes to draw a bear.
I can create a 3D bear with polymer clay

First grade texture monsters

First graders are learning about how artists use texture. Some artists use "implied texture" by making something look like it has texture.  Some artists use "actual texture" by adding items with texture to their art. We used both in our fun monster drawings!

Learning Goals:
I can create a fun monster using lines and shapes.
I can describe the differences between implied and actual texture.
I can create implied and actual texture in my monster.

First grade Picasso portraits

First Grade artists are studying the life and work of Pablo Picasso.

1st grade artists learned about the art of Pablo Picasso. We read a book about him saw how his art changed from realistic to abstract. When he was a child, we was incredibly talented and painted very realistically. His life took many turns and he went through a Rose Period in his art, a Blue Period, and a Cubistic Period. Ask you students what his work looked like in these periods and why he developed each one! :)

One day one, we used shapes to draw some side view facial features, and some front view features just like Picasso did. Then we reviewed warm and cool colors by painting one half warm and the other cool.

On day 2, we learned a song called the "Picasso Polka" from the CD "Songs in the Key of Art." We had a lot of fun singing it while we worked as well!

On day three, we used a Venn Diagram to review the warm and cool colors and had students come up and place miniature artworks in the diagram depending on their color schemes.

For the backs of our artworks, we wrote out our learning goals on a sheet that had some Picasso art. Kids could even decorate the art if they wanted to:

On the final day, after singing the Picasso Polka, we used Mr. Potato Heads to create collaborative "Mr Picasso Heads!" They are heads with the parts all mixed up in a way that Picasso might have created them. Students had to work as a table group (of about 4-5 kids) to create their head as well as give him/her a silly name!

Learning Goals:
I can talk about the life and art of Pablo Picasso.
I can recognize his Blue Period, Rose Period and Cubist Periods.
I can distinguish between a side view portrait and a front view portrait.
I can use warm and cool colors.
I can create texture with a texture plate.

Kindergarten texture tractors

We talked about landscapes and read a book about a pumpkin patch. We drew our own barn with a horizon line, fence, field rows, and a tractor!

After we drew the tractors, we took texturr plates and put them under our papers to rub crayons over. It was like magic to see the textures appear on our papers!

Finally, we did a little collage by cutting pumpkins out of orange paper and gluing them on to our artwork!

Learning Goals:
I can draw a horizon line
I can create texture with a texture plate
I can use the art elements of lines and shapes to draw a barn and a tractor
I can create part of a collage by cutting out pumpkins and gluing them to my artwork

1st grade Princess and the Pea

First grade artists thought about the differences between an author and an illustrator of a book. We talked about art careers and what we could be if we wanted to grow up and be an artist. We then looked at two renditions of the book "The Princess and the Pea." One was more like the original tale and the other was more of a modern spoof on the story. The illustrators chose to do their artwork very differently.

We noticed the different textures  of the donated fabrics that we had and glued the strips down to pile up the many mattresses for our princes and princesses. We also worked hard to blend watercolor cold paint colors in the background.

1st grade Scarecrow Portraits

First grade artists are practicing their knowledge of portraits by looking at a fall scarecrow! We colored them using fall colors and then added straw and buttons to make it into a textured collage.

Kindergarten Shape and Texture Sock Monkeys

Kindergarten artists used lines and shapes and letters to draw their favorite sock monkeys! Then we used our favorite texture plates with 2 colors of peeled crayons to create a multicolored textured background!

Kindergarten Textures and Shapes Fire Trucks

Kindergarten artists used shapes to draw these fun fire trucks! Then we practiced using texture plates to create a textured rubbing bumpy background!

1st Grade Texture and Color Scheme Monsters

1st Graders were working on the art element of creating texture in their art! They drew texture in the monsters as well as used texture plates to make a texture rubbing in the background! We even used a different color scheme for each monster! Such fun!
