Third grade snowman illustrations

3rd Grade artists read the books "Snowmen at Christmas" and thought about the art career of an illustrator. We created various snowmen characters from a "worm's eye view" in preparation for our 3D clay ornament snowmen! 
 
 
We used these snowmen sheets to help us think of ideas!


Learning Goals:
I can describe what an illustrator does
I can list some art careers.'
I can use a 2D image to create a 3D snowmen.

Fifth grade op art

5th grade artists learned about Op Art. They learned about how sometimes it is meant to be an optical illusion and sometimes it is just meant to confuse or jangle the eyes using pattern and lines! We also talked about how artists use materials in their environment, sometimes even junk to incorporate into their work. We used old CDs to create part of their art on. We tried to make the CD stand out from the background visually and actually by wadding up paper and glueing it under the CD to make it pop out.

Second grade landscapes

2nd graders looked at the way artists use foreground, middle ground, and background to create depth in their work. We used these new skills to create landscapes of our own!

Kindergarten shape and texture corduroy bears

Kindergarten artists are learning about how artists create texture in their work. We looked at the way that the illustrator of the book, "Courduroy" made the bear look furry. We used shapes to draw our own bears inspired by this illustrator and made them look like they had texture too! 


After creating texture bears, we created our own 3D versions of our bears with clay!

Second Grade 3D and 2D Architecture


Second great artists had fun reading the book "Iggy Peck Architect" and then thinking about how an actual architect works. First they are hired for the job, then they are assigned a project, put into a team, brainstorm ideas, make blueprints, and finally build the building! We discussed ways that architects work in teams and brainstormed what type of skills are needed to work collaboratively.


After that, we broke up into teams to create various types of architecture with various types of building materials. We used mega blocks, Legos, Duplos, Tinker toys, wooden blocks, and Magformers magnets. Check out some of our fun sculptures! We created a cool school, a shopping mall, a castle, I'll city skyscraper, and a playground!









On day two of our project, we will be designing a two dimensional building using marker, crayons, and an old CD! Stay tuned for photos of this fun artwork!

Look for your "Square 1 Art" coming home soon!

Jamestown students have been busy working hard designing their artworks for square one art! They can't wait to get their FREE stickers with their own artwork on it! Soon, the stickers will be coming home with an order form and if you would like to purchase items with your child's artwork on them, the proceeds will help fund our art program. Curriculum Overview for 2015-2017

Welcome to the Art Room!!!

We are excited to begin another year filled with fun, creativity, a lot of art production!

About Mrs. Teitsma:  I graduated in 2001 from Calvin College and have been teaching elementary art since 2003.  I enjoy spending time with my husband and three sons, digital scrapbooking, photography, fishing and gardening.  

About Mrs. Worden:  I graduated in 2001 from Hope College and this will be my 15th year teaching elementary art.  A few of my favorite things include family time with my husband and twin daughters, scrapbooking, painting, playing the piano, and biking.

THE ART CURRICULUM:

We will be beginning our school year with our annual school wide collaborative project which is titled "Where's Waldo at Jamestown Elementary?" Each student will be reviewing their skills with figure drawing and self portraiture by creating their a figure drawing to be part of a school wide mural where students have to search for Waldo and his friends just like in the Waldo books!

After this, each grade level will work on our annual rotating cultural month. This year’s focus is African Art. Each grade focuses on a different aspect of the culture’s art so that all students can be exposed to a variety of styles and concepts from that culture as they observe each other’s art displayed in our hallways. 

Art history is also a large component of our curriculum. Each grade level focuses on learning about the lives and work of historical as well as some contemporary artists. This year, some potential artists that we might be studying are the following:

1st Grade: Gustav Klimt, Norman Rockwell, Claude Monet, Salvador Dali

4th Grade: Diego Rivera, Heather Galler, Wassilly Kandinsky, Edgar Degas, Alexander Calder, Mary Cassatt

We also keep our curriculum lively by incorporating inspiration from literature and art careers for our art. Many of our projects are inspired from picture books, especially with our younger students. Also, all grades have projects that connect to art career choices such as: Graphic Design, Architecture, Fine Art, Art Education, Fashion Design, Entertainment Design, Photography, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Art Museum Director. 

Finally we try to have each grade level have experience a variety of materials and genres. Some genre choices include: portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, cartoons, realism, abstraction, and figure drawing.

Where's Waldo at Jamestown Elementary?

For our school wide beginning of the year project this year, we are being inspired by the book series, "Where's Waldo?"

Each student got to practice their figure drawing skills in a self-portrait and added it to a mural where students had to search to find the "real" Waldo amongst our Jamestown Elementary students!





BEST YEAR EVER!

Third fourth and fifth graders brainstormed about how to make this year in Art to be the BEST year ever! Each child put their idea on a sticky note for the second day of class. They included things like "I will help us have the best year ever by being kind and respectful to others," and "I will help us have the best year ever by always trying my best," and "I will help us have the best year ever by following the golden rule."

We think it's going to be a fabulous year!

Third-grade Robert Indiana



3rd graders are studying the art of Robert Indiana. They noticed how he used letters and numbers as art at a time when people did not see those things as such. We used his word love, and other words such as hope and joy in our art. We thought about the use of warm and cool colors and pattern to create these wonderful artworks! 


Learning Goals: 
I can identify the art of Robert Indiana. 
I can distinguish between warm and cool colors. I can emboss metal patterns. 
I can create block lettering like Robert Indiana.
I can create a collage.
