Fifth-grade Georgia O'Keeffe Zentangles with Value!

Fifth graders learned about the life and art of Georgia O'Keeffe. They learned about how she liked to zoom up close on her subjects. She loved flowers, skulls and sometimes architecture and mindscapes. We combined her zoomed up flowers with the new art of zentangles! Zentangles are basically doodles with tons and tons of patterns! Finally, we learned how to mix up tints and shades of a single color and used them in our background.

Fourth grade island architecture

4th grade artists thought about island destinations right around spring break and we designed our very own island vacation house architecture!!!

We used neon and regular watercolor paints to create our visions. Each child practiced with blending, layering and mixing paint in their masterpiece.

First grade Gustav Klimt self-portraits in blankets

1st grade artists learned about the life and art of Gustav Klimt. They learned about how he grew up in a large and poor family, how his dad was a gold engraver, how he started off his career designing ceilings in fancy buildings, how he put REAL gold into his paintings, and one of his artworks sold for more money than any painting ever had before!

We were inspired by Klimt's sleeping child artwork so we took photos of ourselves sleeping and put them into a patterned blanket like Klimt's. Then we used his favorite - GOLD to paint the background.

Second-grade Tom Otterness sculptures

GSecond graders had a blast learning about the contemporary artist Tom Otterness. We talked about the differences between two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. We also practiced converting a shape into a draw on the form. We then colored our time Otterness sketches using value and oil pastels. Then we created our Otterness sculptures out of my magic! What fun and how playful!

Third-grade Laurel Burch pattern cats

Third Grade artists learned about the life and art of Laurel Burch. They learned about how she had the bone disease osteopetrosis, had more than 100 bone breaks in her life, how she made jewelry out of metal trash that she pounded with a hammer in her kitchen pots, and how even though she had a very hard life, she didn't make her artwork about complaining, but instead about sharing JOY with others!

Second grade Henri Matisse fish collage

2nd Grade artists are learning about the art of Henri Matisse. They learned that he loved color and that at the end of his life, he loved to "draw with scissors!" We did our own paper collage using scrapbook papers, construction paper and a little bit of glitter just for fun! We were inspired by Henri Matisse's "Goldfish" and so we created our own little goldfish bowls!
