First graders are studying architecture. We looked at many types of architecture and compared and contrasted them with a friend. We looked architecture that is old & new, fancy and basic, homes and castles, bridges and sculptures, famous and everyday. Students each received an image of one of these constructions and after discussing with a friend the similarities and differences, we chose to put them in one of four areas on the board:
1. I would love to LIVE here.
2. This is the most FUN place!
3. I would NEVER want to visit here.
4. This is the most strange and UNIQUE place.
Then we discussed the reasons why students chose what they did! It was so fun to hear their answers!
We expanded our thinking with this worksheet for the backs of our artworks.
We read "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" and looked at the architecture of the cities. We next designed our own Who Architecture and even added a Grinch peeking in on the town! Thank you to email@example.com where you can find the creator of this cute lesson!

The 4th grade artists brainstormed about what type of careers that they could have if they decided to become an artist. One of the jobs we discussed was that of a graphic designer. We watched a slide show about what graphic designers do and noticed that they also design things like wrapping paper! We see a lot of wrapping paper this time of year so we created our own stack of presents with uniquely designed wrapping papers. We talked about using color schemes to make the presents stand out from each other.

5th grade artists are learning about the life and art of the Austrian artist named Freidrich Hundertwasser. We compared how his architecture differed from other architecture of his time and considered how WWII impacted his life and work. We noticed how he preferred organic shapes instead of geometric shapes. We designed our own Hundertwasser inspired city architecture and considered our color schemes and how color can affects the finished art.
REPORTING: WHAT I LEARNED IN ART ABOUT HUNDERTWASSER:
I learned that Hundertwasser didn't like that no one could tell who lived inside a home. So in his apartment homes he would allow people to paint outside their windows. :) ~ Anna
I learned that Hundertwasser liked to have a lot of greenery. on top of his buildings. ~ Roman
I learned that Hundertwasser liked to make his houses with squiggly lines instead of straight lines because he thought that straight lines were to ordinary. ~ Ashton
Kindergartners looked at the differences between shape and form. We created our own clay ornaments using clay, paint, sequins and twisty wire!
Third grade artists looked at different types of collage, the differences between shape and form (2D and 3D, reviewed color families (warm/cool and primary/secondary), and then created our own form collage birds using paper plates, tissue paper, paper towels, string, twisty wire, googley eyes and other various materials.
We displayed our flock of collage birds in our library!
Learning Goals are that Students Can:
* Explain the difference between 2D and 3D art
*Explain what a Collage is
*Use a variety of materials to create a 3D bird
*Identify the various color families and use one in their artwork
*Manipulate wire and tie knots with string

Kindergarten artists watched the youtube clip of the song/book "5 Green and Speckled Frogs." We noticed how the artist made the eyes super big to make the frogs look cuter. We drew our own frogs and used the dark and light values of green to color them. On the frame, we used a dashed line to show the flight path of a big that is about to be eaten!

Our students look so forward to our Free Art Days! Once their class moves all the way to the end of our the Free Art Day Game board (by earning spaces for respecting themselves, each other and their school, for being good listeners, and for working quietly) they get a day to create and play in art! Here's a snippet of some of the fun we have!
